A little higher than the animals

Why is it that, despite our enormous amounts of education, relative freedom, and prosperity, when times are tough we relegate ourselves to the lowness of animals? This is an interesting subject, and one I would like to pursue later. Biology and math finals are two days away! Ahhh…!
